It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Dolly—the
beautiful black horse who faithfully served as one of the heartbeats of Lantern Lane Farm for the past 20 years.
To so many, she was more than a horse. She was a quiet source of comfort, a steady presence, and a safe place to land. She stood beside children healing from trauma, veterans carrying the weight of PTSD, individuals battling anxiety and depression, and families walking through unimaginable grief. There was something extraordinary about Dolly. She seemed to know exactly when someone needed the gentle nudge of her nose, the warmth of her presence, or simply the gift of standing quietly beside them. Thousands of lives have been touched by the healing she helped make possible.
Her story at Lantern Lane Farm began with what can only be described as God’s perfect plan.
Shortly after moving to the farm, Ralph jokingly said he wished he had a black horse so he could ride down the driveway and jump the fence while wearing a shirt with wide blouson sleeves flowing dramatically in the wind. It was an amusing picture—especially since Ralph had only ridden a horse once before on a trail ride!
Determined to find that black horse, Joni searched far and wide. She and their very pregnant daughter-in-law even drove all the way to Alabama to purchase one, only to arrive and discover it had just been sold. Disappointed, they turned toward home but made one last stop at a farm near Shelbyville.

As they drove into a pasture filled with grazing horses, one horse left the herd and walked directly to their truck. She placed her head through the open window and rested it gently on Joni’s chest.
That horse was Dolly.
She had already been promised to another buyer, so they returned home with an empty trailer, believing the opportunity had passed. But a few days later came the unexpected phone call—she was available after all.
Dolly arrived at Lantern Lane Farm just before Christmas, and the rest is history.
Soon after, she gave birth to her foal, Apostrophy, all by herself in the back pasture because, true to her independent spirit, she refused to stay in a stall. From the day she arrived, Dolly established herself as the Alpha horse of the herd—a position she held for two decades. Many horses challenged her over the years, but Dolly always remained the quiet, confident leader.
While Ralph never fulfilled his dream of riding Dolly down the driveway and jumping the fence, their son Brandon eventually surprised him with the flowing shirt he had always imagined wearing. Ralph still has that shirt, and we like to think he’ll always picture himself riding Dolly across the farm with the wind at his back.
Today, Ralph, Joni, and the entire Lantern Lane Farm family are incredibly grateful for the gift of Dolly’s life. She brought immeasurable joy, peace, and healing to this farm and to every person who had the privilege of knowing her.
As we grieve her loss, we also celebrate a life that truly fulfilled its purpose.
Run free, sweet Dolly.
Thank you for every child you comforted, every veteran you stood beside, every grieving heart you helped carry, and every life you changed simply by being you.
